There is a linkage between the mass media and democracy. The press in the Gold Coast played a significant role in the struggle for the country’s independence from colonialism. Ghana was birth after independence and it has experienced a history of democracy and a mixture of coup d’à ©tats. This reduced the beauty of the once vibrant democratic state to a state where the rights of many Ghanaians were imprisoned, beaten, killed by soldiers. Journalist like Kweku Barku, Kwesi Pratt and others were beaten extensively and some were killed as a result of providing the citizens with information on how the military were corrupt. These inhuman treatments brought a state of fear and relegated the media to a background of silence and created no freedom†¦show more content†¦This has concluded in the ability of the citizenry to make very informed political choices. Furthermore, it has resulted in the people getting actively involved in the democratic process. Public-affairs programs on radio and television provide the depth, context and critical analysis that news programs and commercials. Still, the media in new democracies have contributed to public education on current happening. The media’s track record so far in Ghana’s democracy, however, is uneven. Because of the need to cater to the market or to kowtow to the state, the media often shirk their civic responsibility and contribute to civic illiteracy instead of public enlightenment. The media would want to get the message of democracy across to all people from all walks of life and therefore finds it necessary to communicate not only in the English language, but also in the vernacular. Landscape Painting analysis-The Harbor of La Rochelle Essay The ingenuity of the composition is that it used a lot of tricks in the layout of the elements, meanwhile being rendered very simply ND concisely. The artist realized that the eye does not settle naturally on the center of a painting and that compositions that placed the main subject in the centre were not very pleasing to the eye. So he separated the painting into different parts both vertically, which might employed the rule Of thirds that was prevalent among landscape painters in that period. Vertically, the lowest part mainly deals With human activities With great variety and detail; the middle part is the depiction of the river and buildings along the bank; and the highest part is costly occupied With the sky, using less texture and detail so as not to disturb the overall balance thus creating the effect of the landscape receding into the distance. In general, the distribution of people, and the layout of the trees, vessels and buildings along each side of the river creates a symmetrical balance which delivers a restful, calming and visually stable feeling. Court incorporated a lot of elements in this painting to unfold the scene of an ordinary day of a harbor city. In the lower left corner, there are 6 horses which can be easily tell that are used for carrying goods. There are several boxes and ladders scattering around the horses and people carrying box off the horse unhurriedly. Not tar from them, there is a man rolling a barrel laden with goods and another man standing by the river, inserting a pole into it. In the right corner, there stands a man leaning on the bridge, looking into the distance. Right beside him, stand four people hugging with each other, as if they are taking their farewell of each other. The shadow of the building in the foreground indicates the direction of the light, as well as create a chiaroscuro with the bright background. Across the river, A bank receding from right to left, leading our eye from the foreground all the way through the painting, where we can see a cluster of buildings, among which a gothic pinnacle towers aloft, reaching into the cloud. The river is calm and flat, with vessels happily becalmed. The sky above them is clear and serene, With dense White clouds floating. The reflection Of the houses and the sky can be clearly seen in the surface of the crystal, mirror-like river. Court laid out all the subjects With minute exactness, clear outlines, thin brush work. His controlled ND careful stokes create a poetic beauty. The overall tone of the painting is light and pleasant. His palette is dominated by blue, white, and light grey, suggesting a sunny and warm climate and adding to the positive feeling of the peace and harmony of the life in a harbor city. Through the delighting colors and bright light, the artists affection toward the slow-paced leisure simple life can be easily sensed. Very differently composed and painted is the landscape by Jan Van Gone, A Sandy Road With Thatched Cottages, it Offers the rustic scene Of a hot and arduous day. From the foreground, a wide sandy road meanders forward into the background, With piles Of straw and dilapidated cottages dotted along each side. To strengthen my argument I will use statistics from a survey that was conducted by The Australian Psychological Society (2010) with a total of 1,834 respondents. Fourteen percent of the survey respondents were male and seventy three percent were female. Thirteen percent of respondents chose not to disclose their gender (APS, 2010). Concerns about excessive use of online social networking were investigated. 0% of the participants felt a need to log on to these sites several times a day and believed that they wasted time on these sites, however 53% had declared that using social networking sites had increased their participation in social activities. (APS, 2010). Further studies into the effects social networking sites had on how people communicate with each other indicated that internet communication may supplement traditional social interaction like talking face to face and making time to see the other person in physical figure. Cyber bullying was also an expression of concern, particularly among children and adolescents with 28% of respondents reporting inappropriate and distressing behaviour whilst online (APS,2010). A few of the tasteless behaviours included abusive messages and harassment which is not only upsetting but can severely affect how someone feels about how they communicate with others and may feel a need to shut themselves out further from society in fear of abuse and confrontation. Some other disadvantages in using online social networking included: concerns about how catching up with friends had become increasingly non existent and a fear that using online social networking would become addictive. A study conducted by Chak and Lueng (2004) concluded that the more a person is addicted to the Internet, the shyer the person is, which will reflect the way that person communicates in the outside world where face to face interaction is significant. With Internet addiction fast becoming a popular enslavement, studies have indicated that some patterns of Internet use are associated with loneliness, shyness, anxiety, depression and self-consciousness. (Chak Lueng 2004) which in turn will affect your social relationships. Valkenburg, Peter Shoulten (2006) investigated the consequences of friend networking sites with negative feedback illustrating a decline in self esteem and well being. However, the positive feedback indicated that social networking sites had increased their social self esteem and well being. Although the association between Internet use and subsequent social support is negative, the effect is not statistically significant. People who use the internet more subsequently reported larger increases in loneliness while greater use of the internet was associated with increased depression at a subsequent period (Social Tech Science, 2010). â€Å"Social networking displaces face-to-face time: an hour longer spent on the Internet has been shown to equate to half an hour less face-to-face time in a day† (Social Tech Science, 2010, p1). The explosion in Social Networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook is broadly regarded as an exciting opportunity, especially for youth as they are more inclined to embrace the new technologies that are becoming increasingly available, although a study conducted by Kennedy (2009) found that the fastest growing demographic on Social Networking Sites were women aged 55 and older, and Facebook users older than 35 had doubled by the end of March 2009. This proves that Social Networking really has nothing to do with age but with society wanting to embrace new technologies to enhance their personal and professional lives. The results from the research I have gathered demonstrate that social networking sites do have a profound influence on society and it re-defines social relationships. However, it is not generationally specific. â€Å"In every era, cultures go through numerous changes, and in recent years ours has been more impacted than anything else by social media†. (Gordhamer,2009). Although there is a lot of research to support the argument that Social Networking Sites are the most beneficial form of communication and boosts self esteem and well being, we cannot ignore the body of evidence that suggests the impact social media has on our personal and professional lives.
